Swiss Wealth Management: Global Expansion Strategies and Local Adaptation (2026)

In the world of international wealth management, the Swiss brand has long been synonymous with safety and trust. But as Swiss firms expand globally, they face a delicate balancing act: how to assert their Swiss roots while adapting to local cultures and markets. This is particularly evident in the Middle East and Asia, where the Swiss brand has taken a hit due to the Credit Suisse drama and AT1 write-downs. But despite these challenges, Swiss wealth managers are finding success in these regions, thanks to a combination of strategic planning, cultural adaptability, and a focus on building local networks.

I recently spoke with Michael Kuenzi, head of the Marcuard Heritage office in Abu Dhabi, and Michel Keiser, his colleague in Singapore, to explore this topic further. What struck me most was the importance of local adaptation and the need to build trust with clients and employees in each market. While Swiss origins can provide a foundation for trust, it's the personal relationships and expertise that ultimately drive success.

In Abu Dhabi, Marcuard Heritage is pursuing three primary goals: managing client assets that are already in the UAE but have historically been serviced from other centers, building an attractive platform for relationship managers (RMs) from other booking centers, and building a local client book with locally hired RMs. The first goal has largely been achieved, while the other two are ongoing processes.

In Singapore, Marcuard Heritage has been on the ground since 2008, and has recognized Asia's immense growth potential early on. The firm is currently in the midst of a major transition, moving from a traditional discretionary business model to an active advisory approach, which is more dominant in Asia. This shift has allowed Marcuard Heritage to win over local talent and their clients to the advantages of independent advice.

One thing that immediately stands out is the importance of cultural adaptability. In Singapore, Marcuard Heritage has managed to bridge the gap between Western and Eastern cultures, thanks to its long-standing presence, cultural integration, and a mix of local and foreign employees. This has allowed the firm to build a strong local identity and perception, which is crucial for success in a competitive environment.

In Abu Dhabi, Marcuard Heritage is focusing on building local know-how and a local network, hiring employees and approaching clients of Arab descent, and developing an affinity for and understanding of the country and region. This approach is a blueprint for success in the Middle East, where a strong local identity and perception are essential.

Overall, the success of Swiss wealth managers in emerging and established financial hubs depends on their ability to balance global appeal and local roots. While Swiss origins can provide a foundation for trust, it's the personal relationships and expertise that ultimately drive success. And as the world of wealth management continues to evolve, Swiss firms will need to continue to adapt and innovate to stay ahead of the curve.
