The Invisible Architects: Unveiling Australia's Design Powerhouse
The design industry in Australia is about to step into the spotlight, and it's high time! The upcoming 2026 Census, just over a month away, presents a unique opportunity to shed light on a community that has been economically significant yet surprisingly overlooked.
What many don't realize is that Australia's design sector contributes a staggering $67.5 billion annually to the economy. From fashion to technology, from industrial design to interior spaces, designers are the silent architects shaping our world. But here's the twist: we have no idea how many of them are out there!
The 'Write DESIGNER' campaign, a brilliant collaboration between Clemenger BBDO and The Design Institute of Australia (DIA), aims to change this. It's a call to action for designers to stand up and be counted, quite literally. By encouraging designers to identify themselves in the Census, the campaign seeks to establish the first-ever reliable count of Australia's design workforce.
A Creative Mosaic
The campaign's TV commercial is a masterpiece in itself, featuring a diverse array of Australian designers and their creations. From the ARIA award-winning N’fa Jones to the industrial design genius Marc Newson, the film showcases the breadth of design's impact. What I find particularly intriguing is how it connects the dots between seemingly disparate fields, from healthcare devices to cultural icons like Bluey and Kenworth trucks.
This mosaic of creativity highlights a fundamental truth: design is everywhere. It's in the air we breathe, the tools we use, and the stories we tell. It's in the way we navigate our cities and the way we restore our reefs. Personally, I've always believed that design is the invisible thread stitching together the fabric of our daily lives.
The Power of Recognition
The Census is more than just a headcount. By categorizing designers under the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Occupation Standard Classification, it elevates design to its rightful place as a dedicated occupational group. This is a watershed moment, as it will provide the data needed to advocate for designers' interests and secure recognition for their immense contributions.
The DIA's CEO, Simone LeAmon, hits the nail on the head when she says that designers 'challenge assumptions' and 'transform 'you can’t' into ‘you can.' This is the essence of design—turning the intangible into the tangible, the imagined into the real. By participating in the Census, designers are not just being counted; they are taking a stand for their profession's value and impact.
Unveiling the Unseen
Clemenger BBDO's ECD, Giles Watson, rightly points out that designers have remained invisible despite their creations being all around us. This campaign is a chance to celebrate the problem-solvers, the visionaries, and the innovators who shape our world. It's about giving credit where it's due and recognizing the immense talent within Australia's design community.
As someone who appreciates the subtle art of design, I find this initiative incredibly exciting. It's not just about numbers; it's about understanding the human stories behind the products, spaces, and experiences we interact with daily. The 'Write DESIGNER' campaign is a step towards bringing these designers out of the shadows and into the limelight they deserve.
